Overview
Afterlife
- Oversky, also called "Heaven" or "Above". An endless plane where the occupants can never fall ill or get hurt. If something would hurt them, stubbing their toe for example, they'll simply faze through it. Any food or water consumed in Oversky fills the person with joy, keeping a maintained happiness over the place. Of course, if some one truly wants to be a grump, they have no need to eat, sleep, breathe, drink, and so on, but...come on.... The deceased can essentially create anything they please by simply wishing it there as long as it doesn't damage anything else that's already there. It's impossible to get lost in Oversky, as one can teleport back the the center at will and oddly never seems to forget their way around
- The Expanse, also called "Limbo" or "Purgatory". People who are too evil to be in heaven, but too good to go down a level go here. It is an ever growing plane edged by steep mountains and filled with forests, fields, and lakes. The lake is very deep and have miles of underwater tunnels that sprawl underneath the majority of the territory. To prevent the occupants from escaping, an invisible dome covers the sky. Typically, everything is faded or a shade of grey. Colorful objects fade over time. The Expanse is watched over by two irritable deities who were the first two to be sent there upon its creation. Occupants can be killed, but there's only a 50-50 chance that they will actually "die". Upon death, they will disappear from The Expanse for a day and then they will "respawn" at a randomly selected location. This can backfire and send the person into, say, a tree. In which case, the respawn cycle will simply restart, placing the person elsewhere after another day. People can earn their way out of the Expanse into the Above by just doing time.
- Underworld, also called "Hell" or "The Red". A flat plane filled with undying mobs that will hunt and kill the occupants indefinitely. Often referred to as "Demons", but the correct term would technically be "Hellspawn", the creatures typically appear as shambling masses of shadow, light, or color in vaguely animal or human shapes. Whatever they are, they do not exist on Akis unless summoned, which is a rarity reserved for Death's chosen.
States of death:
- Souls are the inhabitants of an afterlife plane. They are only referred to as such while in a plane. Those who have never left are called pure souls. All creatures on Akis have souls, though those of animals and creatures will always go to the Oversky unless they gained higher knowledge that put them on an intelligence level near a humanoid species and also committed terrible sins
- Ghosts are souls that have left an afterlife plane and wander Akis. Only souls in Oversky are permitted to do this and there's a minimum of a one week cooldown after death before this is allowed or possible. This form is quite confusing and nobody knows much about it, not even the ghosts. Typically, they are intangible and invisible unless they will themselves not to be. Even when in a tangible state, ghosts cannot do harm to the living. Able to float and levitate around. Legs may be replaced by a whispy tail, but this can also be disabled. Can eat, sleep, etc, but they do not have to and will not be able to if the intent is malicious (ie, cleaning out someone's fridge.) They will be able to easily return to the Oversky on their own, but can be banished/sent back by using certain items on them. These include salt, walnuts, raw m&m cookie dough, lavender wands, painted eggshells, and porcelain dolls. Salt can be used against ghosts, "killing" them. In reality, malicious intent when using the salt will damage the ghost and they will have to recuperate in the Oversky for a period of time before being able to return. They cannot pass over salt, thus is can be used to surround areas where they are not wanted
- The dissatisfied are a type of ghost that has refused to be happy despite all attempts and is now stranded on Akis, unable to return to the Oversky even if they wanted. It's believed that extreme negative emotions for an extended amount of time sever this link, possibly as a punishment to the misbehaving ghost. They can be banished back via salt or some other item, but will likely return as soon as they're able. Enabling a dissatisfied ghost to be at peace will restore the link are return them to a ghost or soul state
- Hidden are souls or ghosts that have become trapped between planes. This is a rare occurrence and may happen after death or when traveling from plane to plane. They are totally disconnected from both Akis and the Oversky, making them silent, invisible, intangible, etc. Spirit boards, shamans, necromancers, some spell casters, and some Chosen will be able to sense, interact with, or free them them
- Wraiths are a step up from a dissatisfied ghost. They have become violent and are commonly consumed in a fit of blind rage
- Phantoms are ghost hybrids. With ghosts' ability to become tangible, they are able to have children. Phantoms will be born dead, but possess more living qualities than ghosts and do not require a cooldown to swap between planes
Conditions, illness, etc...
- The Brighteye Gene is a rare and spontaneous gene created on the planet Akis by the deity Cye. Gives the host neon colored eyes, powers, and, most of the time, special vision. Depending on the color of iris they posses, they will have different powers. Hosts are always born with this gene, as it cannot be obtained. There is a finite list of colors an effects as follows:
Orange:
Yellow:
Green: Sees friend or foe. Green Brighteyes are colorblind, except when they look at living beings. Those friendly to them will appear blue, while predators will appear red. The brighter the color, the more dangerous/peaceful the creature. Some may appear purple-ish, which is a mixing of the two colors and stands for neutral. The way the host is treated by other creatures will affect the color they see them as and, if serious enough, may affect the view of entire races or species. Plants do not have color, unless they have distinct healing or poisonous traits. Grass would not be blue, but nightshade would be red. Have the ability to heal
Teal:
Blue:
Blue: Allows the host to see ghosts, spirits, and other such remains. Host is also immune to luring lights like those used in the Ore Fields. Living creatures appear to have faintly glowing auras that the host can see from quite a distance. If a living being dies, the aura will appear to consume the creature and then the host will be able to see the ghost or spirit left behind. Plants do not have auras. Some objects may be possessed by spirits. The host will see these things with auras around them. Sometimes, ghosts or spirits follow living beings that they were attached to. These are seen as small, glowing pockets of mist and are referred to as "wisps". However, if a creature has killed a sentient being, there will be a bright dot of light that is said to look like a piece of broken glass. These have been named "shards". Both types of light appear to float around the creature.
Blue Brighteyes are able to speak with ghosts and spirits without any prior training. They have the ability to listen to the dead beings or completely mute them. The "mute mode", as it is called, is often broken in some way, though. It varies from person to person, but some can tune it down until they only hear whispers, while some may not work at all. Shards and wisps that float around others will speak as well and the brighteye can see them as they once were, if they wish to. Another ability they possess, is that they are able to draw ghosts and spirits out with a sort of silent call. These brighteyes are able to cast their voice into the spirit side of the world. Spirits and such typically find the host's voices appealing or comforting and will drift towards it. Perhaps their most powerful ability is seeing into the past. If a Blue Brighteye comes in contact with a corpse, living being, or object of importance, they can choose to see what that thing 'saw'. When this happens, the host's eyes will glow white or blue and they may begin to cry, shake, or speak to what seems like no one. Viewing the past can be very traumatic, as the brighteye will see from the object or person's point of view. They will feel the same emotions and share the same pain. The host often cannot break free of the vision until it is over. While viewing the past, they will be unresponsive to the world around them. Thankfully, others can call or shake them out of it fairly easily. Objects of importance can be anything at all, but there must have been a creature tied to it at some point in time. For example, they would be able to see through a doll that a child had held dear, but not through a discarded pencil that the owner never cared about.
Purple: Allows the host to see into other's dreams or thoughts.
Pink: Allows the host to see hidden beings. For example, if an Earth Golem was hiding by making itself appear to be a rock, the brighteye would be able to recognize it instantly as a golem.

Illnesses
Demon Stuck: Can effect: Demons with modes
-Starts merging the modes with the Demon's personality, typically making them easier to activate and more violent
-Demons fully consumed by this illness will become machines of rage and destruction
Fermented mentality: Can effect: any.
-Very easily spread through genes
-Gives the host a bloodlust at a very young age, provoking them to kill insects, small animals, and eventually larger creatures.
-Eventually, something will happen that turns the host on someone they care about. Most of the time, the host will succeed in killing this person and although their soul goes to the afterlife, their voice becomes trapped in the host's head. This only happens if the host knows the victim well enough to be able to replicate their voice in their head.

holidays
Winter Snow: Basically Akis' equivalent of Christmas. December 25th. Centered around giving gifts, being with family, and kindness. Trees, homes, and even creatures are decorated with magical lights, auras, and other shiny things to spread the cheer. It's arguably the most well-known holiday on the planet. It's guaranteed that it will snow, provided the biome will allow it.
Drake Day: Difficult to plan for, as it happens on a random day in August. Always begins at 1 AM. It's easy to tell when the day has struck, as everyone's eyes will begin to glow, appearing as beautiful, glittering gemstones. Those who don't have eyes or have lost them will be granted a sixth sense, giving them perfect awareness of their surroundings. Everyone is able to breath a brilliantly colored flame that crackles quietly and flows almost like air. If this is not an option, they will be able to create these decorative fires from their fingertips. Nothing can be burned with this, as it is only for looks. As the day goes on, one's skin will slowly be consumed by shimmering scales. As the sun begins to lower in the sky, one will feel a tingling between their shoulders. When the sun begins to set, beautiful dragon-like wings will slip delicately from their skin. Instantly, they will have perfect knowledge of flight and an urge to take to the sky. If the person already has wings, they will simply transform into the dragon wings. If the person has a fear of heights, they will find it not effective. As the colorful light spreads across the land, the sky will fill with people, laughing and playing in the clouds. When night falls, a rainbow of flames both breathed and created with a stroke of the hand will light up the atmosphere. At 1 AM on the next day, every single person will find themselves tucked into their resting place, warm and safe. To this day, no one is sure if Drake's Day is real or a dream, but one thing is for sure: the gods are in on it.
Festival of Singing Lights: Begins on the 1st of July. Small, colored balls of light float through the streets and across the fields. They are about the size of a softball and leave the sound of wind chimes or tinkling bells behind them. If one can catch a ball of light, they will be granted a small, simple, innocent wish. This can include a bag of coins, cotton candy, a puppy, or even a better mood. The lights are not hard to catch, as they float lazily along. Sometimes, they even run onto people, as if on purpose! There doesn't seem to be a limit as to how many a person can catch, but if they are using the lights for greedy intentions, they'll find the ball disappearing into a cloud of dust. It's a common practice for people to catch an orb, but to save the wish as a gift for a loved one. Sometimes, when a wish is made, the ball will shoot into the sky, exploding in a brilliant firework. This only happens if there is enough room in the air. Rather than working, most people are given time off. Some use this to set up stalls or carts in the street, selling treats and drinks to those wearing themselves out. Some faster, more agile people even offer to catch orbs for a small fee. Pictures are taken of the fast moving people by photographers and offered for a low price. There are even sporting events that can only be done at this time of year. The world has an entire week to play this deity-run game. It's often considered a chance at new beginnings.
Widow's Veil: An anticipated holiday that begins at midnight on the day before the fall equinox. Plenty of news and warnings go around to remind the world of it before it happens. Many candles are both made and bought before the day. Glowsticks, lanterns, sparklers, and other such things are purchased as well. Some people, mainly children, create masks of grotesque faces. When the day arrives, the world will be pitch black. Towns and cities typically leave their street lights out for the holiday, but nothing is stopping anyone from turning on any lights. To most, it's considered "ruining" the day to use light that isn't candles or any of the other preparations. Families often get together to play with bought fire spells and try to scare each other. It's a custom to tell scary stories and try to last through the whole day, until the sun rises on the next. There's often a parades that use lights in clever ways and people showing off their magical abilities like pyromancy. No one seems to worry about any harm coming to them. This is because any kidnappers and the like that so much as try to do anything fishy to another person will find a wall of sparks erupting between the two of them, often chasing the offender off. Because of this, it's common for children to try and create mischief just for the shower of lights.
TIID (There it is Day): In June on a random day. Sometimes ends up in May or July instead. Every single person finds a rounded, egg-like rock somewhere in their day. Colors and markings can vary. Typically are very reflective or have a colorful sheen. Everyone recognizes it when they see it. More confusion than excitement is involved here, as no one really knows what's going on. If abandoned or untouched, the rocks will vanish the next day. However, if the person picks up their rock, it will stay. Some use these as collector's items, others sell them. The stones prove to be very good for carving or holding doors open. Some people will celebrate by throwing their rocks into the ocean/lakes/fountains and eating blondies, but most people just use it as an excuse to eat a dessert.

LANGUAGES
Those born on Akis are very commonly bilingual at the least. People with animal in them typically are taught both Basic and the language of the animal they're part of.
Basic: Pretty much just English with a differnt name and accent. It's the worldwide language of Akis. Basic is said to sound somewhat 'rounded' and 'crisp' despite those two not really going together.
Avian: Those who speak Avian talk in a variety of chirps and warbles sounding very bird-like. While it's not perfect birdsong, it's close enough to communicate with the creatures. The words sound very sharp, and warped, either drawn out or twittered so fast the others hardly know they spoke. This language can be very difficult for those to learn without the proper vocal cords, as it requires very sudden high notes and many strange sounds. Avian doesn't seem to mimic one particular bird as much as all of them.
Feline: A rich and thrumming language. Words often sound filled with purrs or growls depending on the tone. Words and sentences seem to run together, making the speaker appear to mumble nonstop. Meows or chatters are typically used as expletives or exclamations. A bit easier on those learning to speak it - the hardest part is getting the rumbling hum correct and constant. Those who have Feline as their mothertongue have a very distinct cat accent.
Lesser Feline: Spoken by more feral races, namely Overgrowth Prowlers. Unlike Feline, this tongue is solely composed of growls, grunts, and yowls. It doesn't meander as much as the original. While speakers still seem to "mumble" frequently, it's cut much shorter and used less often. Words sound harsh and snapped, as if everything said is an accusation. Harder to learn as tone plays a bigger role in this speak. Depending on the feline used, such as an angered house cat or a mountain loin, the meaning changes. This also makes it near impossible without the correct vocal cords. Those who have Lesser Feline as their mothertonge often struggle to learn other languages and keep a sort of snarl in their voice.
Canine: A brief and sharp language. It hardly takes any time at all to communicate in canine. Voices are often higher pitched and louder, cutting off sharply after having said what needs to be. Mainly, speakers only use barking or huffing sounds. Growls and whines are reserved for aggression or strong emotion, while howls are pretty much never used. Often difficult for those learning to get the pitch right. Those who speak Canine often have a tendency to talk quicker than average in Basic or other languages.

matrimony
When two people wish to be wed, the first step is for one of them, typically the male, to obtain a stone to give to their lover. This is the equivalent of a person on Earth giving the other a ring. The rock must be small and typically is obtained via a quest and effort rather than bought from a store (although that is also an option). For the proposal, there is no display such as going down on one knee or any specific line to say. They are much more customized on Akis. After the proposal is accepted, the couple will go to a ring smith, whose job is to merge metal with the stone into rings for the couple (metal can be provided by the couple if they're overachievers). From there, the rings will be perfectly fitted to fingers or, if they don't have the proper hands for it, pierced painlessly through an ear or some such. If they can, couples often prefer to have the rings in the same place, either hand or ear. After the rings are fitted, they need to find a person qualified to pray to the gods. This is when the actual wedding happens, with the couple at the altar as the "priest" prays for approval of their bond. Typically, couples pick one or two deities to pray to in specific. The chosen gods will have to accept or deny the request, though the latter nearly never happens. In a beautiful, magic filled display, the deity will arrive personally at the wedding to answer, though this doesn't guarantee they will be visible. Answers come in many forms, such as flowers blooming through the floor or a guest keeling over suddenly. After being accepted, the couple will show affection (commonly kiss, but not every species has a mouth, so...) and then the ceremony is deemed over, typically followed up by a party of some sort. Weddings can be preformed with a minimum of three people, those being the bride, groom, and the person praying. Often, there are ring smiths and priests who will put up their services for felons or others who cannot be seen in public without punishment. While it's considered a cherry on top, formal clothing is not required at the ceremony, as some species are too feral to manage such. Weddings can be held at any location and being outside in an open space is quite common. Couples can still be wed without rings or the gods' blessing, but this is often looked down upon as lesser and unofficial and typically only done by those with no other option. If a couple goes through with the wedding even after being declined, which requires some sort of major offence to happen in the first place, they are often cursed in some fashion for as long as they're together. Akis overall has very little awareness or need to know about who's married to who, so paperwork or over the top arrangements simply don't exist.
